Our
client's request for this project was an outdoor environment that
accommodated their active family lifestyle and desire for privacy, and was
also appropriate to the character of their home and the surrounding
Naperville Historic District.
The residence is adjacent to a local college on a main thoroughfare leading
to Naperville Downtown Business District. Initially, the space for play in
the back yard was limited. Therefore, we provided for a generous green space
in the front yard for yard games.
After two years in the home, our clients acquired the adjacent property with
the intent of enjoying greater outdoor living space. The ultimate result was
the creation of the existing, multi-purpose family and entertainment area,
which is simple, yet functional.
Challenges with integrating the two lots included the relocating utilities,
obtaining approval for additional off-street parking, which also functions
as the children’s new hard court, and preserving and removing trees. The
original design intent elegant restraint was also carried through. We
managed numerous subcontractors, while also accommodating the covenants of
the Naperville Historic District Commission.
The
beautiful result include a generous green space that anchors the elegantly
understated front yard, which is punctuated by planters and stone detail
that reinforce the carefully planned lines of the classic design. The new
family space provides additional parking for guests, along with amenities
such as low voltage lighting on columns and walls, a built in grill, ground
level fire-pit with a customized cover for safety. The stone on the privacy
wall was carefully selected to match that of the homes original foundation
dating to the late 1800’s. The fence with arbor that accents the space while
separating it from the busy street.
